In April, 2023, an AI startup, TXYZ, was founded in Cupertino, California. Their product is an advanced research AI, which is grounded in research and powered by AI. The following are digests from the interview and talks with the CEO of TXYZ.
What was the original inspiration of TXYZ?
“We would like to build an AI that is capable of researching on its own, or, an AI scientist in the first place since we have noticed that the key difference of LLM compared with previous technology is that the LLM can output information with such a high complexity comparable with humans, and, academic research ensembles the highest complexity of all human activities, so we believe that academic research should be the most useful playground of AI, and this is our first principle and source of value when we created TXYZ”, said Bojun Yan, the CEO of TXYZ.
“We quickly developed a Beta Version in a couple of weeks which assembles the feature that helps people read articles easily within minutes, and we asked about 100 of our colleagues who are researchers to try it, we got a lot of responses and learned quite a bit from them. We got our seed funding in a relatively short period, we have some friends who work in the field of venture capital, and they all have solid academic backgrounds, they are MIT and Harvard-trained former researchers, they felt the need for such a product just like TXYZ that can solve problems which cannot be solved before the emergence of LLM AI.” He added.
How does TXYZ compare to existing tools like Google Scholar?
“It is simple, compared with existing tools. TXYZ is simply solving a different problem. Traditional tools such as Google Scholar, solve the problem of information asymmetry, say, it helps you find materials much faster, but we have to bear in mind that, it also creates another problem called ‘information overflow’, or ‘information explosion’, since for materials such as research articles, they have high complexity, even if google scholar helps you finding a thousand papers all at once, it is not going to make a difference that you may need one week to digest one paper thoroughly, in this case, finding information faster is not useful, so it is always the complexity the harder problem to solve. TXYZ tackles complexity rather than information asymmetry.”, said Bojun Yan, the CEO of TXYZ.
What are your long-term goals for TXYZ?
“We aim to build an interactive platform to assist researchers in their full research lifecycle. Long term wise, imagine that every researcher can come to TXYZ and ‘teach’ AI their knowhow in research, these knowhows are distilled as agentic workflows and can be shared and used by their peers, what’s more, researchers can build agents on top of each other, this, we called it agent build in a ‘stackable’ fashion, and those knowhows which are previously stored only in human brains can then be transferred into AI. Eventually, TXYZ will be a Human-AI network of intelligence, and going even further, the interactive data we gathered from knowledge workers all over the world may help to train to build the next generation of AI which can think and do reasoning, even doing original scientific research on its own, namely an AI scientist.”, said Bojun Yan, the CEO of TXYZ.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs in the Tech and AI sectors?
“Especially in the field of AI, it is such a new and emerging field, it is still at its early stage, I mean, very early stage. To make it as an entrepreneur in the field of AI sector, one needs to be a true believer, since everything is new, in other words, not many things are verified, you have to be dedicated and be a true believer in AI and that is the source of your energy.”, said Bojun Yan, the CEO of TXYZ.
“The second thing, I think it is essential to be focused. Business-wise, there might be a lot of opportunities, since everyone is looking for use cases of applying AI, just like us, a lot of people and companies approached us, there were people from finance, the law industry, and consulting firms, truly, there might be a lot of potential collaborations with different sectors and different fields and they all look promising in the sense of business income, but one needs to be focused to gain a strong moat for competition in a much longer expectation of period. Last but not least, I think for an entrepreneur who works in the field of AI, one needs to think deeper, much deeper, thinking from the angle of business is not enough, one needs to understand the core value of AI in one’s field, take TXYZ as an example, we have been questioned by a lot of investors that the market size of academic research is small since there are not big internet companies who work in this field. Not until we thought about the core value of AI deeply enough that we realized the core value of AI is reducing the complexity of information rather than breaking information asymmetry which the internet and mobile internet do, we cannot justify the market value of TXYZ.” He added.
